Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe


I remember this one time I tried to impress my best friend with my cooking skills when I first started out as a chef. And believe me, she’s not easy to impress as she works as a professional chef at one of the best restaurants in my town.

Anyway, I set my mind to make something so delicious that even she would be impressed. So, I invited her over for dinner and told her that this time it’d be me who’s cooking.

She agreed, and after researching online what to cook, I decided to go with a tater tot casserole. Boy, I was so enthusiastic about the whole dinner and convinced her that I would leave her speechless.

But, it turned the other way round, as always.

She asked me if it’s ok to bring just a buffalo chicken dip and some crackers as an appetizer so that we can have an appetizer while I finished making my dinner. 

I didn’t mind at all, so she brought it, and guess what? It was spectacular.

When I first saw it, it didn’t look pretty, but once I tried it, I was blown away by how good it tasted. It was a hit.

That’s when I realized she won again. There’s no way that my casserole is better than this tangy, creamy dip that’s so addictive

Ever since then, her buffalo chicken dip is our favorite thing to cook for birthdays, parties, and all kinds of gatherings, and soon after, all our friends started making and eating it. Everyone goes nuts over it.

The best thing about it is that it is so easy to make. You don’t need to be a head cook or chef to make a delicious, creamy buffalo chicken dip. Now I know what to prepare the next time I want to impress someone and so do you.

How to Make Buffalo Chicken Dip Step by Step

This delicious dip is a combination of chicken breast meat, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, ranch dressing, and hot sauce baked together.

It’s not as complicated as it sounds, and if you use canned chunks of chicken or a rotisserie chicken, you can bake it in the oven in 5 minutes. The original recipe requires boiling fresh chicken breasts and shredding them, but this will add on prep time.

You can use whatever hot sauce you like, such as Frank’s RedHot sauce. When it comes to the ranch dressing, you can substitute it with blue cheese if you like.

Even though buffalo chicken dip is originally a layered dip, you can make it by mixing all ingredients together before baking. It’s up to you! Some of my friends say the layer of cheese on top is a bit thick, so they mix it with everything else. I personally haven’t had that issue, so I prefer a layered dip.

You can even prepare it one day ahead and have it covered and refrigerated for the next day. Five to ten minutes of extra cooking is all it needs when ready to bake.

Some of my friends make this delicious dip in the crock-pot which requires stirring all ingredients together and cooking on low for 4-6 hours. They stir it once or twice during the process.

Enjoy this buffalo chicken dip recipe and use it with absolutely anything and everything. I could almost eat it by itself, it is that good. Use it for birthdays, parties and gatherings to accompany anything.


  • 4 boiled and shredded chicken breasts (boneless and skinless)

  • 16 ounces 16 cream cheese

  • A 12-ounce bottle of your favorite hot sauce

  • 6 ounces 6 or 1 ½ cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese

  • 16-ounce bottle ranch dressing, such as Hidden Valley, or substitute blue cheese for half of it

  • 6 ounces 6 or 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese


  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Put the shredded chicken in a medium bowl and stir it with the hot sauce.
  • Spread the chicken and hot sauce mixture in a 3-quart baking dish as a bottom layer.
  • Put the ranch dressing and the cream cheese in a medium saucepan and mix over low heat until the cream cheese is totally melted.
  • Pour the melted cheese and ranch dressing evenly over the first layer of chicken and hot sauce.
  • Sprinkle the shredded cheese on top.
  • Bake uncovered until bubbling and browned on top, or around 30-40 minutes.
  • Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving the dip.
  • Serve with tortilla chips, crackers, celery sticks, or any other vegetable and enjoy.

Can You Freeze It?

Freezing the dip after cooking makes it a little grittier after reheating. Therefore, if you want to have it prepared in advance, it’s best to just stir all ingredients together without baking and store them in a Ziploc bag. Make sure you push all the air out of the bag before you seal it.

Submerge in cold water for two hours or thaw in the fridge overnight before cooking it in a baking pan, as explained in the recipe.
