The one tip that matters: Use strawberries straight from the freezer plus a cup of ice. That's what gives a thick, spoonable slush instead of a thin, watery drink.

It takes about 10 minutes and one blender. Please note that this drink contains alcohol, about 1 1/2 ounces of tequila per glass, so it is for adults of legal drinking age only. For kids, designated drivers or anyone skipping alcohol, the mocktail version below uses the same strawberry-lime base.

Why You'll Love This Margarita

  • Ready in 10 minutes with one blender.
  • Sweet-tart and frosty, with real strawberries and fresh lime.
  • Easy to scale for a pitcher at a party.
  • Alcohol-free option: a strawberry mocktail with the same flavor.

What Makes a Texas Roadhouse-Style Strawberry Margarita

This style of frozen margarita is blended rather than shaken, which I love for a crowd: the fruit, spirits and limeade go into the blender with ice and come out as a thick, frosty slush. Frozen limeade concentrate gives a sweet-tart, bar-style flavor without making a syrup, and fresh lime juice keeps it bright.

I pair it with a Texas Roadhouse-style dinner from our Texas Roadhouse copycat recipes, like rolls with cinnamon butter and fried pickles.

Tips for Success

  • Keep everything cold. Use strawberries straight from the freezer, add the ice and chill the glasses, so the drink stays thick longer.
  • Use coarse salt for the rim. Kosher or coarse sea salt gives a crunchy, even rim. Fine table salt tastes harsher and clumps.
  • Add liquids first if your blender struggles. Pour in the tequila, triple sec, limeade and lime juice, then the fruit and ice on top.
  • Taste before pouring. Strawberries vary in sweetness. Add more lime juice for tang or a little sugar or agave for sweetness.
  • Measure the alcohol. Use a jigger so each drink has a known amount of tequila (about 1 1/2 ounces), and serve responsibly.

Strawberry Margarita Mocktail (Alcohol-Free)

The strawberry-lime base works on its own for anyone who isn't drinking alcohol. Make it as in the recipe with these changes:

  • Leave out the tequila and triple sec.
  • Add 3 ounces of cold water or lemon-lime soda and 1 ounce of orange juice for the orange note of triple sec.
  • Rim the glasses with sugar, or a mix of sugar and a little salt.
  • For more alcohol-free drinks, try our virgin margarita and virgin strawberry daiquiri.

Salt for the Rim: Kosher, Sea or Table Salt?

SaltOn the rim
Kosher saltLarge, flaky crystals that stick well and taste clean. The best everyday choice.
Coarse sea saltCrunchy and slightly mineral. Works just as well as kosher salt.
Table saltFine grains taste sharper and can overpower the drink. Use only a light coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this strawberry margarita contain alcohol?

Yes. Each drink has about 1 1/2 ounces of tequila plus 1/2 ounce of triple sec, so it is for adults of legal drinking age only. For an alcohol-free version, follow the mocktail instructions on this page.

How do I make a strawberry margarita mocktail?

Leave out the tequila and triple sec. Blend the frozen strawberries, limeade concentrate, lime juice and ice with 3 ounces of cold water or lemon-lime soda and 1 ounce of orange juice. Rim the glasses with sugar or salt and serve.

What tequila is best for a frozen margarita?

A 100% agave silver (blanco) tequila works best. Its clean, bright flavor suits the fruit, and you don't need an expensive aged tequila in a blended drink.

Can I use fresh strawberries?

Yes. Hull 1 1/2 cups of fresh strawberries and add about 1 1/2 cups of ice instead of 1 cup, so the drink still blends to a thick slush.

Can I make a pitcher ahead of time?

Blend just before serving for the best texture. To prep ahead, mix the tequila, triple sec, limeade and lime juice and keep it in the fridge, then blend with the frozen strawberries and ice when guests arrive.

Salt or sugar rim?

Coarse salt is the classic and balances the sweet strawberries. A sugar rim, or half sugar and half salt with a little lime zest, makes a sweeter drink and suits the mocktail.
