Where Do French Toast Sticks Originate

Although it had the “French” name on it, it isn’t what you think it is. The term “French toast” was coined during the 17th century in England but history suggests that it had been prepared and served during the earliest Roman Empire. Before this sweet snack was called such a name, there had already been similar versions from other parts of the world. Like in France, it is popularly known as “pain perdu” or the French term for “lost bread.”

During those times, French people made their toasts from “lost” or stale bread to save and make use of it rather than wasting it. That is how people valued the food that they have and the importance of money. Aside from the “lost bread,” people have used a variety of bread that they preferred to use when making French toasts.

In New York, particularly among the Jewish-American communities, they transform their Sabbath dinner’s leftover challah bread to become their Sunday morning’s French toast. For places like those from the southwestern and western parts of the United States, they use sourdough bread for this particular dish.

Originally, this type of dish is made by soaking the sliced bread into milk, eggs, and is fried. There are also versions where vanilla and cinnamon are also included in the toast’s mixture. Other people recommended slicing the bread into the preferred size at night and then just letting it get dried by itself. Why? According to some, doing this will prevent the bread from absorbing the mixture and get soggy.

When it comes to toppings, you have endless possibilities! Aside from the old-time favorites like powdered sugar, maple syrup, and honey, you can also have whipped cream, applesauce, peanut butter, jam, and jelly. Fruits, ice cream, nuts, as well as yogurt can also be topped on this delightful dish.

Seeing those lists of sweet toppings option, some people wanted their toast to be savory. Yes, Australians, in particular, loves to have their toast serve with tomato sauce and cheese. Sometimes, gravy and bacon are also added. People from New Zealand prefer to have their French toast topped with maple syrup, bacon, and bananas!

No wonder many people have loved this dish throughout the years. Having these sticks is proof that people like to search for new possibilities on foods, but they still consult the original recipe for inspiration.

The French Toast Sticks are a part of the restaurant’s breakfast value menu. For a dollar, you get to enjoy three or five pieces of sweet-fried French toasts sticks. These are soft and moist inside and come with maple-flavored syrup. So, if you are looking for a hearty breakfast, you also add the coffee-and-hash-brown combo and have a great day ahead.
