Thanks to the slow cooker you can have the apple butter simmering while you’re minding the kids or taking care of other tasks, knowing you’re soon to be in for a treat.

It has to be said, there’s nothing really like the Autumn months and the coziness that comes with them. Going to Christmas markets has to be one of my favorite pastimes during this period. If there’s one thing that makes me really burst into a smile, it has to be the Apple Butter.

What is Apple Butter?

Apple Butter, irrespective of the name doesn’t contain any butter at all. I know, strange naming 🙂 Its important that before we jump into making apple butter from scratch, we explain what it is. Simply put, Apple Butter is an extremely smooth and well concentrated form of apple-sauce. You are required to cook it for an extensive length of time – 12 hours to be exact. This then provides you with the rich tasty and caramelized texture.

It mightn’t be very common for many of our readers, hence the explanation. Many people might ask whether it’s a type of dairy butter but you’d be mistaken if you thought that.

Best thing about it? You can literally put it on anything and it will instantly improve the taste exponentially. If you happen to feel at ease when cooking this, don’t be alarmed that’s completely normal and one of the fascinating sensations you get when you make this.

This recipe is perfect for those looking to spread Apple butter on absolutely everything. Really is a great treat to have in the autumn time and extremely easy to make.

Ingredients

  • Four pounds Four of cooking apples, requires peeling and slicing

  •  1/2 cup apple-cider vinegar

  •  Three cups of sugar

  •  One small cup of tightly packed brown sugar

  •  One tsp of ground nut-meg

  • Cinnamon

Directions

  • Initially, you are required to simmer the apples with the apple-cider vinegar in the slow cooker for around six hours in total. You should have this at a high setting.
  • Following this, make sure to add sugar and spices to the slow cooking appliance. Stir occasionally
  • Set this to cook at a low temperature for around 4 hours.
  • You can then spread your lovely apple butter over anything you fancy and could do with this sweet flavor.

Notes

  • I used Granny smith apples in my recipe but I don’t believe this should impact the output much.
  • Cinnamon is a nice additional to this recipe, however isn’t necessary.
  • No canning involved.
