Taco Bell Classics From the 1960s to 1990s

Enchirito

1. Enchirito

Bell Beefer

2. Bell Beefer

Picture a sloppy joe made with taco meat: seasoned beef and taco toppings on a hamburger bun. It arrived in the mid-1970s, faded out by the mid-1990s and came back for a short run in 2012. Make it at home: Spoon saucy taco-seasoned beef onto a toasted hamburger bun with shredded lettuce, diced onion and a little red sauce.

Chili Cheese Burrito

3. Chili Cheese Burrito

The chili cheese burrito fans call the Chilito ran for about a decade and was phased out toward the end of the 1990s. It came back on the Y2K Decades menu in September 2025. Make it at home: Roll beefy chili and a big handful of shredded cheddar in a flour tortilla, then steam it covered for a minute so the cheese melts.

Meximelt

4. Meximelt

Seasoned beef, pico de gallo and a three-cheese blend in a soft, steamed flour tortilla. Cut in 2019, then back for limited-time Decades menus more than once since.

7-Layer Burrito

5. 7-Layer Burrito

Beans, rice, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, tomato and cheese, with no meat in sight. It ran from 1993 to 2020 and has had one short comeback since. Make it at home: Layer warm refried beans, seasoned rice, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, tomato and cheese down a large tortilla and roll it tight.

Lost in the 2000s and 2010s

Gordita Supreme

6. Gordita Supreme

A thick, pillowy flatbread folded around seasoned beef and toppings. It left in 2019 and returned for the 2024 Decades menu. Make it at home: Warm thick, soft flatbreads in a dry skillet, fold them around seasoned beef, sour cream, lettuce, cheese and diced tomato.

Double Decker Taco

7. Double Decker Taco

A crunchy taco wrapped in a soft tortilla glued on with a layer of refried beans. It left in 2019, with limited comebacks in 2023 and on the Y2K Decades menu in 2025. Make it at home: Spread warm refried beans on a soft flour tortilla and wrap it around a filled crunchy beef taco.

Caramel Apple Empanada

8. Caramel Apple Empanada

A golden, crunchy pastry pocket with warm apple pieces and caramel inside. It left the menu in 2019 and has had short comebacks since, so watch for it, but don't count on it. Make it at home: Fill rectangles of pie dough with diced apples cooked in butter, brown sugar and caramel, seal and fry at 350°F until golden.

Volcano Taco

9. Volcano Taco

A bright red taco shell with seasoned beef and a spicy cheese sauce. It launched in 2008, the Volcano menu disappeared in 2013, and it has popped back a couple of times since. Make it at home: Fill crunchy taco shells with seasoned beef, lettuce and cheese and spoon over a spicy cheese sauce made with nacho cheese and cayenne.

Back for short runs

Beefy Crunch Burrito

10. Beefy Crunch Burrito

A beef and rice burrito with crunchy, spicy corn chips tucked inside. It first left in 2011, has come back since, and returned again on a limited-time Decades menu from August 20. Make it at home: Roll seasoned beef, rice, nacho cheese, sour cream and a handful of spicy crunchy corn chips in a large flour tortilla, then serve right away while the chips crunch.

The One That Came Back for Good

Mexican Pizza

11. Mexican Pizza

Taco Bell took it off the menu in November 2020. Fans made so much noise that it came back in 2022, and by that September Taco Bell said it was back for good.

Why Does Taco Bell Keep Bringing Items Back?

Taco Bell is famous for limited-time comebacks. Its Decades menus brought back the Meximelt, the Gordita Supreme and the Caramel Apple Empanada in late 2024, a Y2K lineup with the Chili Cheese Burrito, the 7-Layer Burrito and the Double Decker Taco in 2025, and another limited-time run of the Meximelt, Beefy Crunch Burrito and Caramel Apple Empanada from August 20.

Most of these come back for a few weeks, so a returning item is never a promise. The Mexican Pizza is the big exception: fans pushed hard enough that Taco Bell made it permanent again.

Is the Mexican Pizza discontinued?

No. Taco Bell removed the Mexican Pizza in November 2020, brought it back in 2022 after fans pushed for it, and by that September said it was back for good. My copycat Mexican Pizza is a fun one to make at home too.

The 7-Layer Burrito ran from 1993 until 2020, when Taco Bell cut it, and it has had one short comeback since. It's easy to make at home with refried beans, rice, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, tomato and cheese in a large tortilla.

Why did Taco Bell get rid of the Meximelt?

Taco Bell cut the Meximelt in 2019 and has not shared a detailed reason. It has come back for limited-time Decades menus since, so you might catch it, but you can't count on it. My copycat steams it soft at home in about five minutes.
