Here’s everything you need to know to make homemade Disneyland churros.

How To Make Disneyland Churros

If you happen to not know what churros are, they are fried pastry dough covered in cinnamon and sugar. The treat originates from Portugal and Spain, and it’s one of the most popular treats sold at the happiest place on earth. In fact, it’s sold almost everywhere, from fancy restaurants to food trucks.

You’ll find it wrapped with parchment paper on one end to prevent your hands from getting sticky while eating it.

This simple dessert is beyond delicious and now you can make your own churros at home. The recipe comes from Disney itself so you have to try it at least once. It’s simple and easy, and won’t take you more than half an hour.

All you need to make this tasty treat is the baking basics – oil, butter, eggs, sugar, water, some flour and salt, and of course – cinnamon. With this recipe, your kitchen will be the happiest place on earth at least for a day.

The first step to making homemade Disney churros is to make the magic combination of cinnamon and sugar. You do that by mixing some ground cinnamon and granulated sugar. You can make this combo in advance and store it in a jar so you can use it for all sorts of desserts.

After making this delicious combination, you should put it in a shallow bowl and set it aside.

The next step is making the dough by melting the butter, salt, water, and cinnamon in a pan. After everything is melted together, flour is added gradually and stirred gently to get a dough ball.

The dough needs to rest for a couple of minutes before eggs are stirred in. Then, it needs to be put in a pastry bag with a star tip using a spoon.

Once the dough is ready, you heat some oil in a deep skillet. The dough should be slowly pushed through in small churro bite forms. A butter knife will help you to cut each piece off into the hot oil.

The churros are then fried until they turn golden brown on all sides. Once cooked, they are strained out with a spider and coated with cinnamon sugar on all sides.

Finally, the coated churro bites are rested on a plate.

You can enjoy your homemade Disneyland churros on their own or dip them in different sauces such as a dulce de leche sauce, melted chocolate, salted caramel, or sauce made of berries. Whatever you decide, it will be wonderful.

In case you make more churros than your family can eat, which is rather unlikely, you can store them in an airtight container. In this way, you will keep them fresh for up to 2 days.

Your churros will be crispiest and most delicious while still warm, so don’t expect the same crispiness once they cool down. That’s why it’s best to enjoy them right after cooking or within an hour or two.

Without further ado, here’s how to make this simple, sugary snack that your kids will love.

Ingredients

  • For Coating
  • ½ tsp. ground cinnamon

  • ½ cup sugar

  • For Churro Dough
  • 8 tbsp. 8 unsalted butter

  • 1 cup 1 water

  • ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp. salt

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 – ¼ cups flour, all-purpose

  • 1 – ½ cups oil (vegetable or canola oil)

Directions

  • Put the ingredients for the coating in a small bowl and mix them well. Set the bowl with the cinnamon sugar aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, add the butter, water, cinnamon, and salt and melt them over medium heat. Stir until the water starts boiling. Continue cooking over low heat.
  • Add flour in the melted buttery mixture and stir until you get a dough ball. Remove the saucepan from heat and set it aside for five to seven minutes.
  • Add one egg at a time with constant stirring and once everything is well combined, set it aside.
  • In a medium skillet, heat oil over medium heat (350°F). In the meantime, put the churro dough into a piping bag with a star tip using a spoon.
  • When the oil is heated up, gently pipe one to two inches strips of churro dough over the saucepan and use a knife to cut them so they drop slowly into the oil. Do this until there are enough churro bites in the saucepan, but make sure they don’t overlap.
  • Fry them until they turn golden brown on each side. Use a slotted spoon or spider to remove them from the oil and put them in a bowl. Don’t forget to cover the bowl with paper towels before placing the cooked churros so they can drain.
  • Toss the warm churros into the cinnamon sugar combo and make sure all sides are well coated.
  • Enjoy them on their own or serve them with some dip or sauce such as salted caramel or melted chocolate.

Notes

  • This recipe can produce anywhere from 40-45 churro bites, dependent on how big or small you cut them.
  • Churros don’t typically last long but if you have some leftover place them in an air tight container. Consume within 2 days.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Make sure not to over do it with filling up the pastry bag. Doing so can give less control of the dough.
    • Ensure you leave space when frying your Disney churros. By leaving the bites spread out it will mean they can cook quicker and not overlap onto other churro bites.
