Drain and crumble 8 ounces of block feta, then blend it with 3 tablespoons of olive oil and a teaspoon of lemon juice until creamy and fluffy. Pulse in a seeded, finely chopped jalapeño and 2 tablespoons of red onion so you still see little flecks. Chill for 15 minutes, swirl into a bowl and finish with olive oil and chili flakes.

The one tip that matters: Buy feta in a block packed in brine, not pre-crumbled. Crumbles are coated with anti-caking powder and blend up grainy instead of silky.

What Is Cava Crazy Feta?

Crazy Feta is Cava's spicy whipped feta, one of the dips you can add to any bowl or pita on Cava's menu. It shows up in several of the chain's signature bowls, usually alongside hummus, and it's the one people ask about most.

Cava doesn't publish the recipe, so the amounts here are mine. My test for any copycat: does it taste like the original, and can a home cook make it reliably? Creamy, salty, a little fiery, with fresh green flecks: this one passes.

Ingredient Notes

Exact amounts are in the recipe card below.

  • Block feta: sheep or cow's milk feta in brine. Sheep's milk feta is tangier and creamier.
  • Olive oil: a fruity extra virgin oil gives the dip body and that glossy swirl on top.
  • Jalapeño: fresh, not pickled. A serrano works if you want more heat.
  • Red onion: just 2 tablespoons for sweetness and crunch. A shallot is milder.
  • Lemon juice: one teaspoon brightens the salty feta.
  • Greek yogurt (optional): makes it lighter and fluffier, a little less salty.

Step-by-Step Photos

Here's how it comes together. Exact amounts, times and temperatures are in the recipe card below.

Tips for Success

  • Block feta only. Feta packed in brine blends silky. Pre-crumbled feta has a powdery coating, and my first try with it was grainy and a bit sad.
  • Dry it well. Pat the feta dry before blending. Extra brine makes the dip loose and very salty.
  • Pulse the jalapeño last. Blend the feta smooth first, then pulse the chiles in. If you blend them from the start the dip turns pale green and loses those pretty flecks.
  • Taste your jalapeño. Some are mild as a bell pepper, some are fiery. Touch a tiny piece to your tongue and decide how much to add.
  • Too thick? Blend in another tablespoon of olive oil or a splash of cold water. Too thin? Crumble in a little more feta.
  • Let it rest. Fifteen minutes in the fridge softens the raw onion bite. It's even better the next day, which is why I make it on Sunday with the rest of my bowl prep.
  • Make it smoky. Char the jalapeño over a gas flame or under the broiler for a few minutes before chopping. It tastes deeper and a little sweeter.

A creamy, spicy whipped feta dip inspired by Cava’s Crazy Feta: block feta blended with olive oil, fresh jalapeño and a little red onion until fluffy with green flecks. Ready in 10 minutes, best after a short chill.

Ingredients

  • For the Crazy Feta
  • 8 ounces block feta in brine, drained

  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more to drizzle

  • 1 large jalapeño, seeded for mild or with seeds for hot

  • 2 tablespoons red onion, finely chopped

  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

  • 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt (optional, for an extra fluffy dip)

  • 1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes, to finish (optional)

Directions

  • Drain the feta, pat it dry with paper towels and crumble it into the bowl of a small food processor.

  • Add the olive oil, lemon juice and yogurt (if using) to the feta. Blend for 1 to 2 minutes, scraping down the sides, until creamy and fluffy.

  • Add the jalapeño and onion and pulse 4 to 6 times, just until they are flecked through. Stop while you can still see little green and purple bits.
  • Taste and add more jalapeño if you want more heat. Chill for 15 minutes so the flavors settle, then spoon into a bowl, swirl the top, drizzle with olive oil and finish with a pinch of chili flakes.

Mild, Medium or Fiery

Here's how I adjust the heat for different crowds.

How to Use Crazy Feta

  • In a Cava-style bowl: with my copycat Cava grilled chicken, saffron rice, greens and pickled onions.
  • With falafel: a spoonful next to my crispy Cava falafel is the best kind of cool and crunchy.
  • As a party dip: with warm pita, cucumber spears and cherry tomatoes. If you're wondering which bread to buy, my guide to naan vs pita sorts it out.
  • On breakfast: dolloped over scrambled eggs or smashed on toast.

Storing and Make-Ahead

Crazy feta keeps for up to 5 days in an airtight container in the fridge. The flavor gets better after a day, so it's a great make-ahead dip.

Stir it before serving, since a little oil can rise to the top. Freezing isn't a good idea: the feta turns crumbly and watery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cava crazy feta made of?

Cava describes Crazy Feta as a spicy whipped feta. Copycat versions, including this one, blend block feta with olive oil, fresh jalapeño and a little onion, with a squeeze of lemon. That gives the creamy, salty, spicy dip you get on Cava bowls.

Is Cava crazy feta spicy?

It has a medium kick from fresh jalapeño. At home you control it: scrape out the seeds and ribs for a gentle warmth, or leave some in and add chili flakes for a hotter dip.

Can I make crazy feta without a food processor?

Yes. Mash the feta with a fork, then beat in the olive oil and lemon with a whisk until creamy. Mince the jalapeño and onion very finely and stir them in. It will be a little more rustic but just as tasty.

How long does homemade crazy feta last?

Keep it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Stir it before serving and drizzle a little fresh olive oil on top. Don't leave it out for more than 2 hours.

Can you freeze crazy feta?

I don't recommend it. Feta goes crumbly and watery after freezing, and the whipped texture doesn't come back. It's quick enough to make fresh.

What do you eat crazy feta with?

Spoon it into grain bowls with grilled chicken or falafel, spread it inside pitas and wraps, serve it with warm pita and cucumbers, or dollop it on scrambled eggs and roasted vegetables.

Is crazy feta the same as whipped feta?

It's a spicy version of whipped feta. Plain whipped feta is just feta, oil and sometimes yogurt or cream cheese. Crazy feta adds fresh jalapeño and onion for heat and crunch.
